<image:caption>Alice was the first card I completed in my five work series of turning five of the characters for Lewis Carroll's The Adventure's of Alice in Wonderland into tarot cards. In essence the characters shown on the card are representative of the themes and attributes of the tarot displayed. Throughout his work, Lewis Carroll depicts Alice as a rather naive and innocent girl who struggles to understand that which is outside of her ‘normal’. As the protagonist she also is the center of the adventure and the story’s plot. This ties well with the tarot card, The Fool. Some such descriptions as shown above include similar themes to those mentions and in fact one interpretation of the tarot deck is that it is The Fool’s story that is told through them all, which lines well with Alice as well.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Digital Art</image:title>
<image:caption>The Mad Hatter was the second card I completed in this series. My interpretation of the Mad Hatter in the novel is that while he is completely and utterly mad (as most in Wonderland are), he is notably skilled in his tinkering ability (he has made his watch not tell the time, but rather act as a calendar with the day/month/time) and engages in lengthy philosophical debate and rhetoric with Alice and his peers. This lines up well with the Magician which is often tied with the resourceful and creative. Furthermore, the Mad Hatter is very spontaneous and nonsensical so the artwork actually uses no curved lines to represent his “off the cuff” nature</image:caption>

      <image:title>Digital Art</image:title>
<image:caption>The Mad Hatter was the third card I completed in this series. The White Rabbit on the other hand is the character that first leads Alice into Wonderland and is the one that she seeks and follows throughout the story. It can be interpreted that the 10 White rabbit is Alice’s hope and her path home in the story. Similarly, The Star is about hope, positivity, faith and is a guiding light. All of these are very indicative in my opinion of the White Rabbit’s role in the story. On top of the basic theming I wanted to use the stylisation of the tarot cards to represent further meaning. Alice and the White Rabbit are both styled after the drawings by Sir John Tenniel in the original novel whereas the other three cards are far more abstract with a flat/block art styling. I have done this to represent the sort of “realness” of the situation, the White Rabbit illustrated is seen in the real world by Alice before she follows and as such I have styled them both in a more realistic manner. The other denizens of Wonderland I have done are comparatively more ‘mad’ then the White Rabbit or Alice as well so I have tried to represent their sort of different types of madness and personalities through the artwork styling as well.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Digital Art</image:title>
<image:caption>The Queen of Hearts was the fourth card I completed in this series. The Queen of Hearts is the closest the story has to a primary main antagonist, any such thing she may deem as wrong (for which the list is long) she screams “Off with their head!” and orders the execution of the offending party. Even in the novel she is described as a force of nature and a walking disaster, all of which tie very cleanly into The Tower and its theme of sudden and terrible change. Finally the Queen of Hearts is an easier to logically follow but even more preposterous in the way she demands beheadings for minor mistakes. I have shown this by not only making her red with rage, but using a colour palette for background and clothes that while visually cohesive would not make sense in a real life context.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Digital Art</image:title>
<image:caption>The Cheshire Cat was the last card I completed in this series. The Cheshire Cat is the definitely one of if not the most mysterious and curious of characters in the story. On top of representing these elements, The Moon also details illusion, complexity and uncertainty as part of its theming. The way the Cheshire Cat plays with and confuses Alice as well as the King/Queen of Hearts and their executioner shows this clearly throughout the story. Furthermore, the Cheshire Cat does not reveal much of his logic or knowledge and purposefully keeps himself mysterious and confusing. To help demonstrate this visually, I have tried to keep the shading extremely minimal to show his “lack of depth” and clarity in his intentions and meanings.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Digital Art</image:title>
<image:caption>For this series of works I wanted to create the first three starters in the Pokémon series of Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle but only using existing media and transforming them. Bulbasaur symbolized the use of applying ones own skills upon a different canvas. I started with a few images as a literal canvas to build upon, for example the bulb on the back is garlic, the skin is a leather texture, the eyes and mouth are taken from animals and so on. With the base to work upon completed, I then used liquify to shape the skin texture before painting over the top using blending modes such as multiply to shade it. I also used adjustment layers to non-destructively shift the hue, brightness and contrast so the pieces of various elements fit together better. I mainly focused on painting and building up the shapes of the Pokémon while keeping in line with the styles and medium I wanted. As the final touch on top off framing the Pokémon using a hedge texture shaped as a leaf, I used some filters to add a canvas texture towards the end to add to the painterly aesthetic.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Digital Art</image:title>
<image:caption>Charmander was the second work I finished and was more about the transformation of the base image using techniques and building that singular image up. In particular I wanted to pay homage to another medium and with a halftone shaded sort of comic book style. I used the cutout filter to break the image into simple colours, then used varying tools like threshold adjustments and colour selection to select the shaded parts of the image. I then completed creating sing a mix of halftone filters, blend modes, colour fill layers as well as blend if adjustments to show through everything that was thresholded as white. After adding a gradient, some text, a flame in the background and a border around the image I completed this third work.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Digital Art</image:title>
<image:caption>Squirtle was the last piece I completed and represented a collage style, which is indicative in particular of using existing images/influences to create something else entirely. I used various existing images and shapes of real world objects to form the shape of squirtle without editing their shape. While I scaled and recoloured elements I never cut or broke apart and of the images, using stacking layers to form the shapes I wanted. As mentioned with Bulbasaur, I did this through the use of blend modes and adjustment layers, with shading and shape being added through the former and visual adjustments through the latter to colour match everything. This in particular was important as while I tried to choose objects that were close in colour, there was bound to be differences. After creating the Pokémon itself I used a messy collection of random objects as the background and framed the Pokémon using other objects to create a water droplet silhouette.</image:caption>

      <image:title>test</image:title>
